United
States National Committee
on Sugar Analysis
New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
The history of the U.S. National Committee on Sugar Analysis (USNC) is
intimately linked to that of the International Commission for Uniform Methods
of Sugar Analysis (ICUMSA), in no little part because Fredrick Bates was the
guiding spirit for both.
The United States National Committee was formed in 1934, by Bates, who
served as its original chairman. During the war years, with most government
work and much industrial work devoted to the war effort, the USNC did not
function. On 16th September, 1947, Bates convened and informal meeting in New York City for the
purpose of reorganising the United States National
Committee. The USNC purpose is to represent the sugar interests of the United States
and its territories in the International Commission for Uniform Methods of
Sugar Analysis.
The objectives of the National Committee are:
- To secure, create and study
methods for the analysis of sugars, sugar products, and refining aids in
order to bring about the adoption of international and national uniform
and accurate methods.
- To promote by all appropriate
means the study of matters pertaining to the affairs of the International
Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis, hereinafter referred to
as the "Commission".
- To provide proper
representation for the interests of the United States sugar industries
and associated industries in the deliberation of the Commission and other
technical organizations.
